Local infrastructure organisation, Community Action Wirral, has registered Team ‘Cool Wirral’ to compete in a national energy saving competition – the Big Energy Race. The community led national initiative aims to help organisations and individuals take control of their energy bills.
Teams encourage individuals to sign up as ‘team members’ and undertake household energy challenges, such as tracking their meter readings, turning down boiler thermostats or turning off appliances. The more team members each community group recruits and the more challenges that are undertaken, the more points the whole team earns. The race is now on to recruit team members from across Wirral and accumulate points by promoting energy efficiency actions.
There are a variety of weekly prizes to be won – in addition to the benefits to be had from saving energy. At the end of the competition one team will be crowned the Big Energy Race Champions winning a cash prize towards a community energy initiative.
Dominic Griffiths from Energy Projects Plus has been travelling around the city region gathering support for the Merseyside Collective Switch and recently attended the Big Energy Race Launch event at Liverpool One shopping centre, where 200 people received free information about the projects.

One of the ways you can earn points for ‘Cool Wirral’ is by participating in the Merseyside Collective Switch. The scheme works when a large group of people get together and use their collective buying power to negotiate a better deal from energy suppliers. The more people who are involved in a switch, the bigger the buying power and the better the deal is likely to be. Thousands of local people joined the previous rounds and saved a total of £424,000 a year on their energy bills so far, with average savings of £212.
By switching energy suppliers together, we could all get a better deal on our energy bills. We’ll be back in touch with you after 2nd March to let you know about the special offers we’ve negotiated with suppliers on your behalf and to tell you how much you could save. The more people who register the better the deal we’ll get, so join in and don’t forget to tell your friends!
