Merseyside collective switching scheme launched

January 20, 2014

Householders from across the region are invited to join the Merseyside’s Collective Switch to see how much they could save on their energy bills.

The Switch Together, Save Together scheme is organised by local charity, Energy Projects Plus, together with the Merseyside local authorities. It aims to reduce people’s energy bills by using collective buying power to negotiate cheaper tariffs from energy suppliers.

This is the second collective switch organised by the partners. 4,600 residents joined the first collective switch which took place in June and saved Merseyside residents a total of £76,435 on their energy bills. This switch aims to be even bigger and better by negotiating an exclusive cheap tariff.

Mr Allan Brame from Oxton, Wirral took part in the last collective switch and saved £465. He said; “A few minutes time, a straightforward process and a large saving. Why wouldn’t you do it?”

Householders are invited to register their interest in the collective switch in order to receive information about the negotiated tariffs. The registration period runs from 20th January to 10th March 2014. By registering their details, householders will help give weight to the scheme by increasing its bulk buying power. It’s free to join and householders will be able to see how much they would save before they decide if they want to switch suppliers. There is no obligation to switch.

Anyone can join the collective switch, regardless of current supplier or payment methods. Those who have never switched their energy supplier or who haven’t switched in the last 12 months, are likely to benefit most. The scheme aims to make it safer and easier to switch supplier, and advisors are on hand to offer free and impartial help every step of the way. The last collective switch resulted in offers from Scottish Power, Npower, The Co-operative Energy and Good Energy, with up to £50 cashback against their tariffs for those who joined the collective switch. Offers were available on a variable tariff; fixed tariffs, quarterly billing tariffs and for prepayment customers.

The Merseyside Collective Switch is backed by Halton Council, Knowsley Council, Liverpool City Council, Sefton Council, St Helens Council and Wirral Council.

Peter Owen, Chief Executive at Energy Projects Plus said: “This is a great opportunity for the people of Merseyside to join together and collectively benefit from reduced energy bills. The last Merseyside collective switch showed that by joining together, we can make a difference. It’s free and easy to join, and there’s nothing to lose. I would encourage everyone to join in and see how much they could save by collectively switching.”

Householders can join the collective switch by registering online at www.LCRenergyswitch.co.uk or by calling the local Save Energy Advice Line on freephone 0800 043 0151, where residents can also get free and impartial help and advice about saving energy at home.

Merseyside and Halton schools get support to be waste savvy

January 13, 2014

Schools across Merseyside and Halton will able to benefit from a whole host of support activities to reduce their waste and become more resource efficient, thanks to a project being funded through the Merseyside Recycling and Waste Authority (MRWA) and Veolia Environmental Services Community Fund.

The School Waste Action Programme (SWAP) project is managed by the Eco Resource Network, who are a group of Merseyside based charities: Energy Projects Plus, Faiths4Change, Liverpool World Centre and Rotters Community Composting and will offer schools hands on support to reduce their impact on the environment and to engage with and trial different ways to reduce their waste from purchasing to recycling.

More than 50 schools across Merseyside and Halton have applied to join the School Waste Action Programme, and eight have been selected for one to one support .The SWAP project will provide a dedicated Officer to enable the whole school community to engage with and trial different ways to reduce their waste from purchasing to recycling.  The aim is to enable the eight SWAP schools to reduce their waste by up to 25% by May 2014.

The remaining forty plus schools won’t miss out though as they will be able to access other support to reduce waste including a workshop ‘Sustainable Schools: Where teaching meets school business management’ in January 2014 which will provide learning and networking experience to help schools create and embed a sustainable procurement plan.

Included in the support for all the schools will be the Textile Challenge which enables the whole school community to get involved.  A school assembly will launch a textile collection in each participating school and all kinds of textiles – from curtains to cardigans – can then be brought in for recycling with every item contributing towards a recycling payment to each school too.

Cllr Graham Morgan, MRWA Chairperson said: “The Community Fund is about investing in great ideas from the community which have the potential to ultimately save us money by cutting our landfill bill – but that’s just part of it. The work we’re funding will benefit whole communities by providing training opportunities, making environmental improvements, supporting isolated or vulnerable people and helping households struggling on low income.”

Annie Merry, from the Eco Resource Network said “We’re really pleased to have such a great response and look forward to working with schools.  Many schools recognise the need to reduce their impact on the environment but despite excellent materials being available, some struggle for time to make the most of these to reduce school waste and rubbish.”

Carl Beer, MRWA Chief Executive said: “All of the projects we’re supporting represent a real range of great ideas and show just how creative people can be when it comes to thinking of new ways of encouraging people to change their waste disposal habits.”

A visit from Angela Eagle MP

Energy Projects Plus was pleased to receive a visit from Angela Eagle MP at our Wallasey office on Friday.

Angela spoke with members of the team and was particularly interested in the work we are doing with Wirral Children’s Centres through the Warm & Well project. Warm & Well has seen around 900 Wirral families with pre-school children benefit from practical advice on growing their own food, healthy eating and reducing their energy bills. A calendar was produced with pictures of the families who took part in the workshops and Angela was presented with a copy to take home.
