We are dedicated to helping homeowners with long-term illnesses, keep their houses warm.
npower Health Through Warmth (HTW) is a project that was created to offer help to people in England and Wales who have long-term illnesses and are having difficulties funding heating and insulation measures in their homes. Clients don’t have to be or become an npower customer to receive help.
The project was funded by npower in their support for warmer homes and better health.
Energy Projects Plus won the bid to coordinate the Health Through Warmth scheme in Merseyside in 2003, and delivered it until the project closed in 2020.
Who qualified for help?
People with long-term illness who own and occupy their own home in England or Wales, but also have a low income and little or no savings (assessed) and can’t fully fund the work themselves.
HTW will check to make sure the person is eligible, so they’ll have to fill in some forms about their income, expenditure and other details.
What HTW helped with:
- Cavity wall and loft insulation
- Boiler repairs and replacement (if broken)
- Heating systems or appliances (if broken)
- Energy efficiency advice
- Access to funding
Health Through Warmth ensures it uses local contractors to make the installations and stays in touch with clients from start to finish – making sure they are happy with the results.
We covered 5 local authority areas Halton, Wirral, Sefton, Knowsley and Liverpool.

Case Studies
William, Merseyside
William, aged 83, from Merseyside has chronic heart disease, he is blind in one eye and has a hearing impairment. His boiler was almost 30 years old and kept breaking down, leaving him and his wife without heating or hot water.
William contacted Energy Projects Plus, where the local Health Through Warmth co-ordinator is based, to ask if there was any help available. He was referred to the Health Through Warmth scheme, and the co-ordinator arranged for a new boiler to be installed, costing £1,795. William was able to contribute £795, and further funding of £400 was obtained from local the local authority SEARCH scheme. The remaining balance of £600 was accessed from the unique npower Health Through Warmth crisis fund.
William comments “I couldn’t afford to pay for a new boiler and I’d tried to get assistance from other schemes, but I didn’t qualify. When I found out that the Health Through Warmth scheme was able to help me to install the new boiler and help me to fund it, I was just lost for words. I’m so pleased and have peace of mind knowing we can rely on our heating system.”
Victoria, Merseyside
Victoria, aged 47, suffers from severe chronic fibromyalgia and osteoarthritis. She is in constant pain with stiffness and has limited mobility. She had an old, faulty boiler that often left her without any heating.
When Victoria contacted Energy Projects Plus she was referred straight to the Health Through Warmth team. Given Victoria’s situation, our co-ordinator was able to quickly alleviate her heating problems. The co-ordinator arranged for a new boiler and radiator to be installed using a local contractor. The final costing for the replacement came to £1,800 and the bulk of the amount was paid by the npower HealthThrough Warmth Crisis Fund and another charity.
Victoria said: “I knew I couldn’t afford the whole cost of a new boiler, so I was relieved when I found out I could get financial from the Health Through Warmth Crisis Fund and a charity. It’s made such a difference.”
